Saharan Mustard Mapping Project:
You can help create a range map of Saharan
mustard (Brassica tournefortii, or BT), which has enjoyed a bumper crop in the California desert with this winter's
rains. The map will help document the weed's spread, and plan control strategies.

Afton Canyon Tamarisk Removal:
As one of the few reaches along the Mojave River with perennial flows, Afton
Canyon is an important stopover for migratory neo-tropical birds and numerous wildlife species. Near record rainfall in winter 2005 caused significant
flood damage and resulted in saltcedar resprouts in previously cleared areas. About half of the 600 acres impacted were treated in the spring. The Mojave
Desert Resource Conservation District partnered with the Bureau of Land Management Barstow Field Office to treat the remaining 300 acres to prevent the re-establishment
of saltcedar in the restoration area.
Funding ($21,000) for this project was granted through the Preserving Wild California (PWC) program of the Resources Legacy Fund Foundation. The project will take place between November and December 2005. For additional information about this project, please email Anthony Chavez at rchavez@ca.blm.gov.
